Water Reservoir Project
Project Timeline
August 2024
The Town of Middleton ordered a new water storage tank and dome roof through Roscoe (Prime Contractor) Construction and Aquastore. These types of tanks are not available for purchase in Canada.
Spring-Summer 2025
The Town of Middleton worked with federal departments to address cross-border import requirements related to the tank and dome roof.
August 8, 2025
The water storage tank was finally able to be transported across the border and delivered. This was followed by the dome roof three weeks later.
September 2025
The Town continued to follow up with federal authorities regarding import and administrative matters.
October 17, 2025
The Town is advised that the products appear to be eligible under the applicable federal framework for taxation expemptions, with next steps shifting to a different federal process.
April 8, 2026
The reservoir tank is currently being filled and is nearing completition.
May 14, 2026
Installation of 15 horsepower pumps will be happening in the coming weeks. This infrastructure will pump water into the Town from the water reservoir.
June 8, 2026
The tender has been awarded for decommssioning the old reservoir.
Pumps have been commissioned, but modifications are still needed to the Booster Station on Gates Mountain Road.
Public Works is hoping to have the final walkthrough and testing of the new reservoir around June 17-19 (dates and times my vary).
Sidewalk Replacement
May 15, 2026:
Sidewalk replacement has been decided for the following areas:
- Section of School Street in front of Centennial Park
- Section of Gates Avenue from Main Street towards rink entrance.
This project will occur between Summer and Fall 2026. Please note, timelines may vary and dates may change. There will be additional sidwalk replacement in other areas. The public will be notified of the additional sidewalk replacements when they are determined.
Crosswalk Lights
May 15, 2026:
Public Works has been awarded a grant to assist with the purchase of crosswalk lights. Priority areas will be determined by Public Works in the coming weeks and further updates will be provided to the public regarding timelines for the project.
June 8, 2026:
Unfortunately, the Town of Middleton was not successful in securing grant funding for the proposed crosswalk lights. Staff and Council will explore alternative funding opportunities and assess the project's feasibility within this year's budget and operational priorities.
Church Street Road Replacement
May 15, 2026:
Church Street will be completely ripped up. Lines underneath the street will also be replaced, and the street will be repaved. Public Works hopes to begin this project in July 2026. Please note, timelines may vary, and dates may change. The public will be updated on this project in the coming weeks.
Water Valve Replacement
May 15, 2026:
There will be 3 new valves, new pavement and new water lines placed at the intersections of:
- Connaught Avenue/Maple Street
- Connaught Avenue/King Street
Public works will aim to have this project completed in September 2026. Please note, timelines may vary, and dates may change.
Well-Level Sensor
May 15, 2026:
Well-level sensors have been ordered to measure the water levels of the wells in the well field. This is particularly important given the drought conditions that continue to affect Nova Scotia in recent years. The well-level sensors are currently on backorder. Public Works would like to complete this project during Summer 2026. Please note, timelines may vary, and dates may change.
Road Repairs
May 27, 2026:
Due to freeze-thaw cycles, potholes become an increasing issue across the province during the spring season.
In the meantime, Public Works is able to complete temporary repairs using cold patch asphalt. These repairs are intended as a short-term solution until asphalt plants reopen, typically later in the spring, allowing for more permanent patch paving work to take place.
Asphalt plants opened last week, and the Town’s asphalt tender closes tomorrow, May 28. Once the tender closes, an initial round of patch paving will be scheduled to address some of the more significant problem areas throughout Town.
The objective is to repair as many potholes as possible within the approved budget for the project. Once timelines are confirmed based on contractor availability, the public will be updated accordingly.
June 2, 2026:
The tender for the patch paving contract closed yesterday, June 1. As of today, June 2, the contract has been awarded.
The successful contractor will now be scheduled to complete the work based on their availability. Once a timeline has been confirmed, the Town will provide an update to residents through its website and social media channels.
Patch paving will be completed based on priority locations and the severity of roadway deterioration.
